  • What are the differences in effectiveness between retinol, retinal and retinyl retinoate? 
    
    • Retinol, found in the Intelligent Retinol TR range, is the most well-known form of vitamin A and the form most readily available on the market. When retinol is applied to the skin, it is converted to retinaldehyde and then to retinoic acid. Retinoic acid is the active form of vitamin A. This is the form that can actually produce all the effects we have come to associate with vitamin A; increased skin cell renewal, synthesis and protection of collagen and minimising pigment overproduction in the skin. This means a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, a smoother and more even complexion, and a youthful-looking glow. 
      Retinaldehyde, the star of Crystal Retinal and also found in r-Retinoate Intense, is one step closer to the bioavailable form of vitamin A, retinoic acid. It must undergo only one conversion to become active, and because of this it is 11x faster acting on the skin than retinol. Retinal is available at varying concentrations in our Crystal Retinal range. Retinyl retinoate, found in r-Retinoate Day & Night and r-Retinoate Intense, is the ultimate form of cosmetic vitamin A - it has direct activity on our skin cells, requiring no conversion steps like its cousins' retinol and retinal. It has been found to be 8x more powerful than retinol.
  • How do I phase in Medik8 Vitamin A products? 
    
    • For the first two weeks, use you vitamin A twice a week (e.g. Sundays and Thursdays). For the second two weeks: use your vitamin A on alternating nights. Then, if you are comfortable and experience no irritation you can use it every night.
  • When do I have to phase Vitamin A into my routine? 
    
    • Every time you start on a new molecule of vitamin A (eg. switching between Intelligent Retinol and Crystal Retinal). Except when switching to r-Retinoate Day & Night, which is so gentle it doesn’t need to be phased in. You do not have to phase in when moving up strength in the same vitamin A ladder (eg. moving from Crystal Retinal 3 to Crystal Retinal 6).
  • I am new to your vitamin A. Which one should I start with? 
    
    • f you are looking for a vitamin A serum, we would recommend you begin on Crystal Retinal 3; this is MEdik8's next-generation retinaldehyde serum which is perfect for everyone. When first starting on vitamin A, we recommend you phase it into your routine slowly. Use in the evening twice a week for 2 weeks, every other night for 2 weeks and then every night from then on.
  • Vitamin A in summer - can it be used safely? 
    
    • Vitamin A is completely safe to use in the summertime or on holiday, as long as you are applying a high protection sunscreen every day. We'd recommend using your vitamin A serum at night, and then applying an ample amount of sunscreen like Advanced Day Ultimate Protect during the day. If you are in direct sunlight, we recommend you reapply the sunscreen every 2 hours.
